The Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Ashrams in India provide free medical help to local villages where medical facilities can be very limited.
The Swami Sivananda Rural Hospital, Kadavur, Madurai was founded in 2013 and is sponsored and supported by Dr. V. Narayansamy, and the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Meenakshi Ashram, Madurai. The hospital, a five-minute walk from the Ashram, provides specialist as well as general services to about 60 patients a day and 25,000 total per year. Weekly Medical Camps see between 120 and 200 patients, and Mega Camps between 600 and 1000 patients in a day. Village Health Nurses are trained and appointed in each of the seven villages served, and are able to distribute short-term medicine and referral to the Medical Camp. An ambulance vehicle transports patients to and from the Medical Camps in areas where transportation may be an obstacle.
Outpatient Camps including surgical, eye, obstetrics and gynaecology, dental, general medical and surgery, and diabetes are held periodically and a mobile clinic visits outlying areas where transport facilities can be limited. The Hospital also conducts door-to-door health education about breast and uterine cancers, hypertension, diabetes, and dengue fever. Many false notions and fears about surgery and modern medicine are challenged, allowing modern science to be used alongside the traditional village approaches.

By the grace of Master Swami Sivanandaji and our Guru Swami Vishnudevanandaji we are happy to announce that the “Sivananda Free Rural Hospital” was inaugurated on August 24, 2023, next to the Meenakshi Ashram to provide medical assistance to the surrounding villages. The hospital was built with the generous donation of Mr. Arie Mazur from Toronto, Canada and is expected to provide free medical services to around 2,000 villagers on a weekly basis.
Here is the highlights from the inauguration day.
The Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Meenakshi Ashram makes many regular contributions to individuals in the local area for health, education, housing, and social needs as well as conducting workshops and classes for local school children and teachers of the TVS Lakshmi School as well as several other local schools.
